Power: (2/5)

Jumping: (3/5)

Stamina: (3/5)

Game Sense: (4/5)

Technique: (5/5)

Speed: (2/5)

-----------------Total: (19/30)

Not given very much natural talent, Narihira’s playing level comes of hours and hours of hard work, forcing his reluctant muscles to memorize plays and movements. He naturally learns at a slower rate than others, but makes up for it by relentlessly practicing. His specialties lie in being able to execute himself with excellent technique, and reading the opponents movements to get the ball to his teamates at the perfect time. He tries to make sure he is prepared for almost every situation.

Specializes: Defense

Personality:

Napoleon Complex | Emotional | Hardworking | Determined | Compulsive | Loud | Optimistic | Aggressive

At first meeting, Narihira tends to give off the wrong impression, forcing himself to act “tough” and “manly” - a comical act which really just includes a lot of posturing, aggressive glaring while leaning against lockers, and trying to intimidate strangers with weird made up gang signs (which usually inspires more laughter than fear to be honest) to overcompensate for the fact that his looks and interests tend to be on the feminine side. This act is usually soon abandoned as soon as Narihira gets moderately comfortable around a person and/or he becomes so emotional over something that he just forgets - which happens more often than he would like to admit. He’s a bit of a cry baby, and can throw a temper tantrum on the same level as a five year old, but he’s not one cheat his way around something - preferring to defeat the enemy with sheer force of will. He likes to see everything as his “destiny” - whether its accidentally leaving his lunch at home, or tripping over his own feet, and likes to imagine its just one more step on the ladder to success. He’s not one to stay quiet or still for any period of time and frequently gets sent into the hallway for being “disruptive to the class”.

History: (TL;DR at end)

Narihira was born to a single mother struggling to take care of her two children, which for him involved 1. spending a lot of time with his elder sister of four years who was “officially” in charge of him and 2. Wearing hand-me-downs for many years of his life. From his sister. Which included many a flowery skirt and dress.

Up until first grade, it didn’t really matter all that much and Narihira continued to dress in his sister’s old clothes, unaware that anything was wrong until a classic playground scene where a couple second grade boys decided it would be funny to flip the skirt of the cute blue haired first grade girl-- oh wait, boy. Yep. Definitely a boy.

Just a little mentally scarred, Narihira swore from that day on he would become “the manliest man that ever man-ed” (something he would later repeat to his sister furiously and inspire an hour of stomach burning laughter). Unfortunately for him, things wouldn’t change so suddenly and though Narihira tried changing his behavior, his clothing situation wouldn’t change till the end of third grade, when his family’s economic situation finally stabilized and Narihira finally experienced the magical feeling of wearing GUY PANTS.

While Narihira continued to struggle with gender roles, his sister on the other hand, was succeeding in everything she possibly could, becoming queen bee of the school with perfect grades and an exceeding amount of athletic and artistic talent - something which she loved to lord over her little brother, who was, of course, forced to attend every game, every rehearsal, and every award ceremony (as well as take dual lessons with his sister in Gymnastics, Ballet, and Cheerleading, because “family bonding time is important!”- all of which he was forced to participate in for months before begging for the torture to end). The only thing he really enjoyed was volleyball, which was originally introduced to him by his sister since he was an easily available practice partner (it felt more like slave labor).

Angry and feeling overlooked, Narihira waited anxiously for puberty to set in, hoping it would erase his feminine features and increase his height (till he was AT LEAST taller than his sister who was the miraculous height of 5’11”), and maybe magically give him attractive pheromones or, you know, ANYTHING REALLY. As his voice got deeper (“not really, you still sound like a girl-”“SHUT UP”), and the pain in his bones became constant, Narihira nearly cried with joy, knowing that his time had come-- except not really. Around the still-shorter-than-everyone-else height of 5’6”, his growing slowly came to a halt to the soundtrack of Narihira’s sobs and melancholy piano. It was a tragic time.

After his disappointing “growth spurt” (“yes, it needs to be in quotation marks, THAT WAS NOT A REAL GROWTH SPURT”) Narihira fell into a slump, depressed by his sister’s constant success, and in comparison, his constant failure - which actually was on the higher side of average. In a phase of teenage rebellion, Narihira began to slack viciously, turning his consistent B+ average into a D- in the span of a semester, not showing up to volleyball practice and getting benched for the rest of the season, and of course, locking himself in his room to the sound of loud, emotional, music.

It was only after his spotty attendance got him kicked off the volleyball team, that he finally got his head out of his derriere, and realized that his slacking was really only hurting himself. He gratefully grovelled at the feet of his captain and coach, begging that they give him a second chance and pushing himself as hard as he could to improve his playing ability. Even his sister offered him a proud (painfull) pat (slap) on the back.

When it came time to choose high schools, Narihira’s number one priority was going wherever his sister did NOT, even if it meant having to wake up at 4 AM and riding two hours to school on a pink, sparkly, streamer covered bike. Okay, maybe the bike would have to change-- but still. Naruminishi proved to be the perfect combination of not having his sister, having volleyball, not being too uptight, and NOT HAVING HIS SISTER. With a bit of kneeling and kowtowing to his mom (and maybe a bit of bribing), he was able to gain permission to attend his dream high school and attempt to live a life free from overbearing, over-achieving siblings.

TD;DR:
Narihira lives with his single mom and older sister. Up until the third grade he was given his sister's hand-me downs due to his family's financial situation. When Narihira realized his abnormal situation, he struggled with trying to break away from the feminine stereotypes of his childhood along with his overachieving "perfect" sister's shadow . He was overjoyed when he finally hit puberty and therefore his growth spurt, but was quickly disappointed by the results. He was slapped across the face with reality as his height and talent failed to reach his dreams and he sank into a very dark slump. His grades slipped and his attendance for volleyball practice was spotty at best while he locked himself away from the world
Narihira was not aware of how badly he was hurting himself till he was actually kicked off the volleyball team. Finally reaching the end of his slump, he begged for a second chance of his superiors, pushing himself to improve his skill and ability When it came time to choosing high school Narihira picked one that his sister was not attending and after some groveling and kowtowing to his mom, got permission to attend his dream school and get more chances to play volleyball.

Relationships:

Seiji Ito (Captain): "OH SHIT, he's really AMAZING, and COOL, and HE'S SEEMS LIKE A REALLY GREAT CAPTAIN--uh. not like. you know, I want to be him or anything. or. whatever. yeah. okay. we didn't have this conversation." "all i want in life is to call him senpai"
Narihira first saw him at the volleyball team introduction and immediately locked on to him as a “SUPER MANLY COOL GUY” by the number of girls crowding around him and became a little bit (coughs, a lot a bit) of a fanboy. He may or may not be really anxious to ask (and take notes) about how to achieve true man status...

Ninjin: “OTOU-SAN.”

Michi: “PUNK.”
